The most intriguing young player to enter the NBA in years is already responsible for a massive amount of interest in the newest basketball card releases. Zion Williamson rookie cards–especially those with low serial numbers and/or autographs, are already bringing strong prices even before the league’s number one draft pick played in a regular season game.
Most earliest releases picture him in the Duke uniform he donned for one season–or his draft night suit. Then came the first products to show him in his New Orleans Pelicans uniforms including Hoops and Hoops Holiday along with Donruss (the Rated Rookies are always popular). Before the end of summer 2020, we’ll see everything from low-end base cards to 1/1 high-end release monsters selling for five-figure prices.
Panini America, the NBA’s exclusive trading card partner, is having no trouble filling orders for any of its products with Williamson now safely on board. With Ja Morant, R.J. Barrett and a few other 2019-20 draftees holding their own in the potential star department, it’s shaping up to be a memorable rookie class.
Which Zion Williamson rookie card to buy largely depends on your budget. Virtually every rookie card from all of the 30+ products in 2019-20 will have parallels and many have autographed versions. The base cards from lower cost products like Hoops, Certified, Donruss and Origins will be the least expensive, but graded 10s will still carry a premium. Autographed cards from more popular brands like Panini Prizm, Donruss Optic, Contenders, National Treasures and Flawless will be on the high-end of the scale, with some selling for five figures. It’s safe to say that all of them are hot and not likely to cool down anytime soon.
Several hard-to-get Williamson cards sold for $20,000 or more during the first three months of 2020 but there are enough products at various price points to offer room for the budget buyer, too.
