It’s not often someone other than a forward wins the Calder Trophy but there’s not much doubt the finest first year players in the league this year were defensemen. No matter the position, the roster of 2019-20 NHL rookie cards has plenty of potential long-term talent.
Cale Makar of the Colorado and Quinn Hughes of Vancouver have been the two most talked about players. Their lowest serial-numbered autographed rookie cards have driven the strongest prices. The debate about which one was the best in his class will rage on. Both kept the market for NHL rookie cards hopping, even through a pandemic. Adam Fox of the Rangers made it a trio of top defensemen at the top of the rookie rankings.
There are other standouts who have generated collector interest, too.
No one scored more goals among the ’19-20 rookies than left winger Dominik Kubalik of the Chicago Blackhawks. Another defenseman, John Marino, made the transition from Harvard to the Pittsburgh Penguins look easy. Buffalo’s Victor Olofsson played important minutes for the Sabres as did Nick Suzuki of the Canadiens.
