Three out of the first four picks in the draft were quarterbacks. One showed promise before going down with a season ending injury. The first overall pick has struggled mightily with a bad team and the other has flourished enough for analysts to start throwing around terms like “special.”
The book on Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young and CJ Stroud won’t be complete for a while but that little snippet–from the top of the draft board, no less–is why the NFL Draft remains very much a crapshoot for collectors. Figuring out the best 2023 NFL rookie cards to collect can be dicey business and while speculation runs rampant in May, June, July and August, the market really doesn’t start to take shape until the wins, losses and statistics start adding up.
Midway through the 2023 season, it was clear that Stroud appeared to be a great pick at number two. The Houston Texans handed him the keys and the Ohio State product didn’t disappoint. He showed poise, confidence and an arm both strong and accurate. He’d thrown just one interception on 279 pass attempts at the midway point of the season and Stroud’s earliest cards have begun to make appearances on the list of biggest sales and hottest auctions. Kentucky product Will Levis is getting a chance to show what he can do in Tennessee.
Quarterbacks weren’t the only potential stars in the class of 2023. Running backs Bijan Robinson of fhe Falcons, Jahmyr Gibbs of the Lions and De’Von Achane of the Dolphins showed flashes of potential long-term success, with the latter slowed by an injury.
Rookie cards of the top receivers to watch include Puka Nacua of the Rams who quickly became one of the league’s leaders in targets and receptions, Zay Flowers has made the Ravens better. The same goes for Jordan Addison of the Vikings and Josh Downs of the Colts. Tight ends, too, have gotten at least a little love thanks to their production and long-term outlook. Dalton Kincaid, Sam LaPorta and Luke Musgrave appear to have the skills to be solid pros.
