With Zion Williamson and Ja Morant emerging as the two freshest and exciting young names in the NBA, it’s only natural that Panini America would have the duo figure prominently in its NBA sets and 2019-20 Spectra basketball will be no exception when it arrives during this year’s playoffs. The two have been the driving force in a hot market for hoops this season and they’ll be the major drawing cards in this higher end product.
Open a pack and you should pull a signed card of some sort. A Spectra hobby box will contain four packs, with four cards in each. Panini is promising, on the average, four autograph cards and four parallels in every box.
That is a change from the 2018-2019 set, which had four autograph cards and a memorabilia card; in fact, Spectra has changed its configuration for three consecutive years, as its 2017-2018 set had three autograph cards and three memorabilia cards.
Collectors can also make an online purchase — through Panini’s website — of First Off the Line boxes which will have exclusives such as Rookie Jersey Autograph Wave or a Gold Wave.
Parallels for the Spectra base set will fall one to a pack, and collectors could find Silver, Celestial, Interstellar, Meta, Gold, Universal Die-Cut, Marble, and Nebula cards that are 1/1s.
As for inserts, the pun-heavy named Spectracular Performances honors the top achievements during the 2018-2019 season. Color Blast, which is short-printed insert, is a familiar subset from Panini Prizm sets from previous years. The insert will make its debut in Spectra by highlighting 25 NBA stars that span the generations.
Autograph cards will draw the biggest interest, of course, and a key subset will be the Rookie Jersey Autographs. They’ll have on-card signatures and includ parallels like Celestial, Interstellar, Meta, Gold, Marble, and the Nebula Logoman, which will be a 1/1.
Making its debut this year in Spectra are Rookie Dual Patch Autographs, with signatures paired with prime jersey swatches on each card.
Other autograph subsets include Illustrious Legends Signatures, which highlight an array of NBA stars; and NBA Champions Signatures, which features autographs from players who have played on a championship team.
2019-20 Panini Spectra is scheduled for release on May 6, but as usual, that’s subject to change.
