They’re the cards that make box breakers scream. The one-of-a-kind Topps SuperFractor made its debut in 2005 as a parallel to end all parallels–a Refractor that was given a gold spiral pattered look and limited to a lone copy. Pull one of a hot prospect or a superstar rookie and you’ll have dealers hunting you down for the chance to buy it and auction companies hoping you’ll consign it to them. Put it on eBay and your account will suddenly become very popular.
SuperFractors usually come in both autographed and non-autographed fashion. Both are valuable but the signed versions are the ones that bring the biggest bucks. Dozens have sold for five and six-figure prices.
The gold colored cards got a big publicity boost in 2020 when the 2009 Bowman Chrome SuperFractor Mike Trout card sold for a whopping $3.84 million. At the time it was the most ever paid for any sports trading card. It’s one of the cards that helped add rocket fuel to sports collecting’s explosive growth, even if the record was short lived. In 2022, autographed Bowman Chrome SuperFractors of Bryce Harper (2011) and Aaron Judge (2013) sold for more than $750,000 combined. SuperFractors of Tom Brady issued before Topps lost its NFL trading card license have sold for tens of thousands of dollars.
Over $5.5 million worth of Topps SuperFractors have been sold on eBay alone in the last two years and it’s not just baseball cards moving the needle. In April 2022, the 2020 Topps Chrome F1 Lewis Hamilton SuperFractor sold for nearly $1 million in a PSA 7 grade. In a 10-month span, two Max Verstappen SuperFractors combined to sell for nearly $900,000. Over the summer, the 2020-21 Topps UEFA Chrome SuperFractor of soccer star Erling Haaland sold for $70,000. A 10 grade from BGS didn’t hurt.
