Upper Deck is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its first golf trading cards by paying homage to its inaugural 2001 product. Part of the game plan is to put some of Tiger Woods’ original 2001 rookie cards–newly signed and numbered–into its 2026 golf product.
The company announced Thursday that Woods had signed 25 original cards purchased by Upper Deck. They were then numbered and stamped with a 25th Anniversary foil logo. The cards will be randomly inserted into packs that are set to hit shelves later this month.
There will also be 25 sets each of the 2001 ‘Tiger’s Tales’ insert and the entire 200-card base set that are numbered to 25 and given the 25th Anniversary stamp.

The first Upper Deck golf card set with the Woods RC was the surprise hobby hit of 2001. It was driven by the popularity of Woods, who turned the final Sunday of every tournament he was in into must-see-TV for the entire year. His popularity literally created a sector in the sports card market that had barely existed until Upper Deck put out their 2001 set. Donruss produced two PGA Tour golf sets in 1981 and ’82 but no traditional packs were produced until Upper Deck jumped in nearly 20 years later. Woods had already been on the PGA Tour for awhile but with no mainstream producs issued during his early years, the 2001 cards are considered his rookie issue.
“Tiger did more for golf in terms of capturing a new generation of fans and getting younger players paying golf,” Upper Deck’s Director of Sports Brands Paul Zickler told SC Daily. “He was a catalyst in growing the game. I remember watching Tiger and that’s how I got into playing golf.”
Woods had great success early in his career, which opened the door for Upper Deck to create a golf card market. It would not have happened without Woods. It also would not have happened without a major card manufacturer like Upper Deck to legitimize golf cards and give the newly created sector in the sports card market some credibility among collectors.

“He definitely had that aura about him early on and his career,” Zickler said. “Even as an ambassador, when he’s not been able to play competitive golf, he still has a significant impact. Looking back, he drove that next generation of golf fans. And obviously golf has grown because of him.”
As Woods drew fans and collectors into the golf card market, other top stars became collectible with Woods. Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Ernie Els, Davis Love III and many other top stars of 2001 were suddenly showing up in display cases in card shops and at major card shows. But regardless of how popular the other golfers were, it was Woods who drove sales for Upper Deck and the secondary market on eBay. He’s still among the company’s most important athlete contracts.
“When you think of collecting the best here at Upper Deck, he’s on that Mount Rushmore with Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky,” Zickler said of Woods. “Obviously in his career, PGA Tour victories and majors speaks for themselves. And even when he won his last Masters he continued to play at a high level. His skill set for his era was unmatched.”
2026 Upper Deck Golf will be the company’s third golf card release since 2021. It is the first of four that will be released this year. The 25th anniversary provides the perfect opportunity for Upper Deck to roll out a strong golf line-up.
“This release coming out on February 18th has a little bit of a special feel for it,” said Zickler. “And we really wanted to pay homage to the 25th anniversary. So we bought back 25 of his rookie cards, but we actually bought back 25 copies of the whole base set as well.”
Following 2026 Upper Deck Golf will be:
- 2026 Allure Golf: Upper Deck’s first chromium golf product
- 2026 Fleer Ultra Golf: Featuring unique insert cards and full-bleed images
- 2026 Artifacts Golf: A memorabilia and relic-focused set highlighted by event and tournament worn memorabilia, and autograph memorabilia cards
More Than Tiger
While Tiger Woods is the headliner in the set, 2026 Upper Deck Golf will feature flagship and fan-favorite inserts and players.

Headlining this year’s featured rookie class are world number two, two-time major champion, and Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda, Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama, LPGA Hall of Famer Lydia Ko, top-ranked amateur Jackson Koivun, and top-ranked junior Miles Russell. They will all have Young Guns cards, including outburst parallels with gold 1-of-1’s.

Another insert, Retrospective Rookies, features top golfers who haven’t had a Young Guns card in the past, including Woods, Collin Morikawa, Jim Furyk, Annika Sorenstam, Michelle Wie West, and Lexi Thompson. Each player’s card design reflects the Young Guns design from their debut year. Collectors will also recognize familiar Upper Deck inserts, including Dazzlers and UD Canvas.
