A Jackie Robinson rookie card was stolen from a St. Louis area sports card shop but thanks to the efforts of alert collectors, it was recovered the next day in a Missouri shop.
Jim Miller, owner of Collector’s Corner in Belleville, IL, says the surveillance footage revealed a man reaching over a display case, sliding open the back door, pulling the card out and snatching it.
The card’s value was about $9,000.
Word spread quickly, leading to tips from the community, including a Centralia store owner who reported prior thefts by the same suspect. By Wednesday night, a customer at the Missouri resale shop recognized the card and alerted staff, confirming it as stolen.
No arrests have been made, but the Missouri shop, having unwittingly purchased stolen goods, must surrender the card to authorities.
