If old furniture, paintings or other antiques don’t float your boat, PBS’ long-running Antiques Roadshow series usually mixes in some interesting sports memorabilia from time to time.
The current episode is one of those. Filmed in Sturbridge, MA last June, one segment of the show featured a New England woman who was going through her father’s closet and discovered an old cigar box. Inside was a childhood treasure trove he’d saved.
The box was full of baseball cards and thanks to her dad’s propensity for keeping things tidy, they never wound up in the spokes of a bike.
Simeon Lipman ran through a collection of 1948-49 Leaf cards–or at least the top cards in a collection that held dozens of nicer examples from the popular set that was on drug store shelves 75 years ago.
The cards are being sold through Weiss Auctions.
Antiques Roadshow is now in its 27th season. It’s seen by about five million viewers each week.
