Our Vintage Buy of the Week from Just Collect could well be called The Immortals Collection. A Texas man has turned over his remarkable run of football and basketball rookie cards that serve as a virtual tour of the Hall of Fame plaques in Canton and Springfield. The collection, totaling nearly 300 cards, includes examples from as far back as the 1930s Sport Kings and National Chicle issues.
From Jim Thorpe and Knute Rockne to Walter Payton and Dick Butkus and Jerry Rice, virtually the entire history of the NFL is represented. Football collectors searching for nice examples of iconic rookie cards featuring Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Jim Brown and Terry Bradshaw will have the chance to bid on them. The collection includes over 30 Bowman cards from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s including the only two football cards of George Halas and Paul Brown.
Accumulated over many years, the collection is being broken up and some of the cards are already at auction and closing this weekend.
The basketball part of the collection includes the 1948 Kellogg’s Pep rookie card of George Mikan as well as first-year examples of Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Lew Alcindor, Pete Maravich and Julius Erving.
The condition varies with many of the newer cards grading at least near mint.
Vintage star cards, especially rookies, from all sports remain very strong sellers in the marketplace.
According to Just Collect, the seller remains involved in the hobby but decided to part with his accumulation of Hall of Fame rookie and star cards.
