Back in October, SCP Auctions sold a mammoth statue of Sylvester Stallone as Rocky for over $400,000. The 12-foot tall, 1,800-pound creation had been inside the San Diego Hall of Champions, which is now closed.
The buyer of the statue? None other than Rocky himself.
On Christmas Day, Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger posed in front of the statue, which was now in place inside Sly’s southern California home.
The bronze statue is of two identical examples originally made by noted sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg and was used in the 1982 film “Rocky III”. There’s an engraved gold plaque on its base that reads in part: “ROCKY BALBOA Created in 1980 for the Movie ’Rocky III’ by A. Thomas Schomberg Edition #2/3.”
A third copy of the Rocky Statue was created by Schomberg in 2006 and remains at the Schomberg Studios in Evergreen, Colorado.
Stallone has been known to collect sports memorabilia, primarily through his friendships with other famous folks. A 2002 Lakers championship ring given to him by Shaquille O’Neal was sold in the same auction.
