Mickey Mantle memorabilia will be the main draw when Goldin Auctions conducts its 2016 Premium Live Summer Auction at the 37th National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In a news release, Goldin Auction said a “historic” Mantle collection, featuring a championship ring and awards, has been consigned to the live auction session, which will take place on Thursday, August 4. It will be the only live auction event at this year’s National.
Goldin’s Premium Live Summer Auction will be limited to approximately 100 lots, and each item will received two pages of treatment when the auction catalog is published.
One of the premium items for auction appears to be Mantle’s 1955 American League championship ring, which will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity. This was “next year” for the Brooklyn Dodgers, who finally defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series after five previous Series losses. Injuries limited Mantle to appearing in just three games in the 1955 Fall Classic, and he batted just .200 with two hits — including a solo homer — and one RBI.
Mantle did much better during the regular season, batting .306 and leading the American League with 37 homers, 11 triples, 106 walks and a .611 slugging percentage.
The auction at the last year’s National in Rosemont, Illinois, generated more than $3 million in sales and included a $400,000 sale of a 1952 Topps Mantle graded PSA 8.
The Mantle championship ring was the only item Goldin announced so far for the live auction. In addition, Goldin will conduct a catalog auction session on Saturday, August 13.
