A year earlier, he’d become the first player to enter pro basketball straight out of high school. Moses Malone signed with the ABA’s Utah Stars but just 16 games into his second pro season the Stars folded and the 20-year-old future Hall of Famer was sold to the Spirits of St. Louis.
That franchise wouldn’t last long either as the league began to contract ahead of its impending merger with the NBA. Malone’s jersey, though, lives on thanks to one young person associated who was with the team at the time.
Chris Nerat from Heritage Auctions shows us a one-of-a-kind shirt that’s on display at the National Sports Collectors Convention.
Bidding on the jersey is underway now in Heritage Auctions’ Platinum Night event.
Heritage also has a 1988-89 Malone jersey from his days with the Atlanta Hawks.
