It’s the time of year when the seasons and collector interest sort of blend together. Baseball is in full swing. Basketball is heading into the post-season. Hockey is already there and there’s plenty of football talk as we head into the draft. Collectors have their pick of products. Here’s what we’re seeing at Stadium Sports Cards in Aurora, Colorado.
Baseball – As the season really gets going, all of the 2012 Topps releases are still on fire. The most popular product is Topps Museum Collection. Customers still love the incredible jumbo swatches and in spite of the wholesale market being significantly above cost, each time we bring it back in, it never seems to be enough to get through the next day.
2012 Panini Prime Cuts baseball has been welcomed back by my collectors who have missed the long list of Hall Of Fame relic cards this release is known to deliver. Also garnering a lot of interest from this offering are the signed cards with nickname inscriptions. We went through two cases of it in less than a week and are on the hunt for more.
It is followed closely on the hot chart by Topps Gypsy Queen. Once again, collectors are grooving on its design and the on card autographed singles look incredible. By this time last year, many stores were out of the 2011 version, but there seems to be plenty to go around as shops went deeper this year than last.
Tribute is popular too and one collector pulled a Hank Aaron autographed card (see left) from our packs.
Basketball – As the playoffs approach, I am seeing greater interest in releases that offer cards of some of the division leaders. Our 07/08 wax sales have been bumped thanks to Kevin Durant and the Thunder. In addition, it never hurts when the Nuggets are in the playoffs and our 09/10 product sales have been helped by the play of Ty Lawson.
Football – With this being NFL draft week the 2012 offerings have almost caught up to 2011 product wax sales. Going into the draft, the fact that there are so many name players is creating quite the buzz for Leaf Draft, PressPass, SAGE Hit Low and High and the brand new Upper Deck football.
Interestingly enough, the 2012 Leaf Draft Pick has been the most popular 2012 product so far in my store. We sold a ton of the 2011 Leaf releases, and there was a lot of anticipation to see what their second year would bring. I am just pleasantly surprised that we have sold more of it than of the new PressPass because of their exclusive with Andrew Luck.
2012 Upper Deck football arrived the day before I wrote this and we expect to move loads of it this weekend. While Upper Deck no longer enjoys using NFL uniforms for veterans, it has a 20+ year history with the NFL and box busters. We have a significant amount of it on hold for customers who are attending our monthly Trade Night this Saturday.
Hockey – While the Avalanche are not part of the postseason, Avs rookie Gabriel Landeskog played well enough to ensure 11/12 releases will continue to move well in Colorado during the offseason.
11/12 Upper Deck SP Game Used has been on fire since hitting earlier this month. We have seen some monster hits including some sweet autographed letterman cards. While shops could use some more products before the playoffs, but there is a lot of hype for the upcoming 11/12 Panini Elite hockey. Having seen some of the potential pulls, something tells me it will not last long after arrival.
