Huggins & Scott has opened its second ‘Masterpiece Auction’ of 2012 with a pair of rare Ty Cobb cards and a scarce Sherry ‘Magie’ error card from the fabled T206 set among the hundreds of items up for auction.
Bidding is available until Thursday night April 5 with the 30-minute rule beginning at 11:00pm eastern time. Bidding on some lots starts as low as $100.
In addition to the Magie error, vintage card collectors are seeing an abundance of 19th century and early 20th century rarities including professionally graded and raw examples of cards from a variety of designations, including a D304 Brunner’s Bread Ty Cobb (current bid $4,250); an attractive T227 Honest Long Cut Cobb; and a variety of tobacco and candy cards from the turn of the century. There are numerous complete and near sets from 1910-present. Several post-war card highlights include complete sets from the 1940s to present with many high-grade stars; and numerous “shoebox” collections (always a crowd favorite).
Memorabilia in this auction include a variety of items from former Detroit Tigers third baseman Don Wert, including a game-used uniform, game-used bats from All Star and World Series games, team-signed baseballs and more. There is also a game-worn Hank Aaron jersey from his final days as a big leaguer with the Milwaukee Brewers that’s already attracting attention.
Former 2002-03 Syracuse national championship team captain Kueth Duany’s collection is on the block includng three pieces from the championship net, his game-used uniforms, 1000-point commemorative ball, Final Four Watch and more.
There’s a Mickey Mantle bat given to former pitcher Bob Cerv with a letter from Cerv (current bid $3,000); a scarce 1929 George “High Pockets” Kelly game-used and signed bat (PSA/DNA 8.5); one of the exceptionally rare 1888 Galaxy of The National League Hastings Prints; and a 1904 Providence Grays Team Composite Photograph with 11 future Major League players pictured.
There are a large number of autographed lots including baseballs, bats, lithographs, photographs and others consigned by collectors from all across the country.
