It was the year of the Beatles, the Cardinals, Koufax and the end of the ‘Colt .45s’nickname for Houston’s baseball team. Topps’ annual set went back to a more standard look after two years of woodgrain borders and bold colors.
Our Vintage Set Break of the Month in cooperation with Burl’s Sports features a 1964 Topps complete set.
There were individual cards of 30 Hall of Famers in the 1964 set, along with leaders and specials. All 587 cards in the set will be heading to new homes later this month.
According to Burl’s Sports owner Justin Burleson, “the cards range from VG-EX to EX-MT condition with about 2% falling above or below that.” Some of the major stars have been professionally graded including the Roberto Clemente and Pete Rose, each of which rates a PSA 6 and Mickey Mantle, rated PSA 5.
The set breakdown is 34% VG-EX, 43% EX, 19% EX-MT, 2% VG or less, 2% better than EX-MT.
The price to participate in the break is $4.99 per slot plus shipping (free for 11 slots or more). Once all slots are filled (one for each card in the set), a random draw is conducted by computer and the cards are assigned to slot owners based on that draw.
