As it waged war with Bowman for the pennies and nickels of kids, Topps opted for art in 1953. The follow up to the company’s debut set in ’52 was based on oil paintings and the result was pretty impressive. Today, the 1953 Topps set is regarded as one of the best ever made and this month, in cooperation with Burl’s Sports, it’s our Vintage Set Break of the Month.
Burl’s will break a 1953 set with the opportunity to land a Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige or other valuable card for the
spot price of $29.99.
The Mantle card is rated ‘5’ by Beckett Vintage Grading. The last BVG 5 Mantle sold at public auction brought $1,500 in March.
Once all slots are filled, a random drawing will be held and cards will be distributed.
The set being broken is primarily VG/EX to EX/MT with some of the major star cards graded. The breakdown is 27% EXMT, 33% EX, 31% VG-EX, and 9% VG to VG+ (None lesser).
A checklist with a list of the grade of each card is on the company’s website.
