Fifty years ago, collectors were anxiously anticipating its springtime arrival. The set offered a lot of familiar faces like Mantle, Mays, Aaron and Clemente along with a couple of raw rookies who showed promise (Morgan and Carlton among them). Now, those who missed out on 1965 Topps wax packs will have a chance to land one of those special cards in the Vintage Set Break of the Month from Burls Sports.
The 598-card set being offered averages VG/EX to EX/NM with several star cards having been slabbed by one of the three major grading companies.
The set includes a BVG 5 Mantle, 5.5 Clemente, SGC 70 Carlton rookie, PSA 6 Morgan rookie and PSA 5 Mays.
Similar to the case and box breaks of current sports card issues, a vintage set break offers participants the chance to purchase a slot (or more) at a set price.
Once all spots have been sold (one for each card in the set), a random drawing is done by computer, the break is presented live online and Burls Sports distributes the cards by mail.
The card(s) received are determined by a computer-aided random draw.
Multiple spots can be purchased to increase one’s odds of receiving one of the better cards.
Slots in the 1965 Topps set break are priced at $5.99 with spots set to go on sale Monday morning at BurlsSports.com.
“The ’65 Topps set is one of my favorite designs from the ’60s,” said Burls’ Sports owner Justin Burleson. “I have always enjoyed the team flags, and it’s hard to not enjoy the mass of Hall of Fame members in this set. This set is a great entry-level set for new vintage collectors, and even mid-grade cards present very well.”
It’s the fifth Vintage Set Break for the company and the second of 2015. Last month, they offered a 1934 Goudey Baseball set.
“The set breaks have been far more successful and popular than I could have imagined with a really high repeat participation rate,” Burleson stated. “The ’34 Goudey set sold out in about 36 hours, and it was almost exclusively repeat participants.”
Collectors will have a chance to participate for free. Burls Sports will be giving away three slots to qualifying participants in a contest set to open Monday on the company’s Facebook page.
