Our Vintage Photo of the Day from RMY Auctions is this wire service photo from 1941 that shows Phil Rizzuto (or “Phillip” as he’s called on the caption) in his first big league spring training.
Rizzuto hit .307 for the Yankees in his rookie season, stealing 14 bases. He struggled at the plate in the World Series but he helped the Yankees win it all. In 1942, he made the American League All-Star team and was a World Series hitting star.
It was his steady fielding that earned him a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, though, and this photo shows the very beginning of a Yankee career that continued with a 40-year broadcasting career following his playing days.
Measuring 6×8, the Rizzuto rookie photo shows little wear and is rated 9.5 on a 10 scale.
It’s one of more than 200 up for bid in RMY Auctions’ latest auction. The company specializes in vintage photographs. Current high bid is just $28 with the auction set to conclude Tuesday night.
