Over 400 original sports photos from decades ago are on the auction block in Hyee Fall Premium Photography Auction.
Heavy on baseball history, the auction includes numerous images either never seen before and seldom offered material from prominent photographers of the past. Many are original newspaper images, with decades-old captions still attached to the back. The auction is being conducted on eBay.
Some are well-known photographs but rarely seen originals including a 1951 United Press International photo of baseball legends Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams dated September 20 1951—late in Mantle’s rookie season. Originating in a newspaper archive, the PSA Type 1 photo has a current bid already over $2,500, with the auction not slated to end until Sunday.
Babe Ruth is the subject of numerous photos including one capturing his 701st career home run in 1934 and another taken at his last game as a Yankee in 1934 that also includes the clipping from a newspaper story in which the photo was used.
There’s a 1936 photo of the Yankees’ powerhouse lineup that includes DiMaggio as a rookie and Lou Gehrig.
Jackie Robinson is pictured in another photo, showing off a New York Giants pennant after being traded by the Brooklyn Dodgers in December of 1956. Robinson, of course, retired before playing a game with the Giants.
Other photos include a 1924 shot of Walter Johnson, taken during the Washington Senators’ World Championship season, a rookie year image of Frank Robinson, others showing Roberto Clemente, Stan Musial, Michael Jordan and other Hall of Famers from various sports.
The baseball photo auction listings will close Sunday, September 29 with the other sports images ending September 30. You can see them all here. There are also more than 900 photos from the world entertainment.
