Not long after the Vintage Pack Break of the Week launched last summer, Just Collect tore into a pack of 1980-81 Topps Basketball. One of the more unique–and often maligned–issues in Topps’ history, the set does have one big thing going for it: the rookie card that features not only Magic Johnson and Larry Bird but a card of Hall of Famer Julius Erving to boot.
Their first attempt to hit the lottery with that one came up empty, but there was a Bird Rebounding Leaders card inside. The secondary Bird and Johnson cards are some nice consolation prizes for collectors who choose to fork over the $75-125 you’ll likely pay for an unopened pack today.
This week, it’s back to the hoops well for another try.
The 1980-81 Topps packs feature eight cards (with three perforated mini cards on each panel) and a team poster insert. Of course, there are other stars possible inside including a few Hall of Famers.

The Bird is a Scoring Leaders card, which reminds us of how good he was as a first year player while the Magic Johnson card they pulled is a Rookie All-Star.
Just Collect is buying vintage unopened packs and vintage cards. See them online at JustCollect.com. They offer hundreds of fresh items via their weekly eBay auctions.
[…] Collect opened one in July that yielded a Bird Rebounding Leaders card, then followed it up with a Magic All-Star card in January. Not bad at all…and there are other stars in this set […]
