Wayne Gretzky was on the way, but the National Hockey League didn’t feature many big time rookie cards 37 years ago. Hockey cards weren’t for speculators or investors either. They were for collectors the 1976-77 Topps hockey set is one even those on a limited budget can successfully chase.
Our Vintage Pack Break of the Week courtesy of Just Collect takes you back to that season’s Topps card issue, which featured the traditional style pack with gum and a semi-glossy insert set.
The set dropped to 264 cards and while it may not have had a large representation from each team because of that, it does help make completion a lot easier.
The set began with six League Leader cards and included team cards with checklists on the back and a Record Breaker subset made its debut. The final card in the set showcases the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Card #214-218 are the ‘Team Trios’ subset.
Each unopened pack of 1976-77 Topps hockey contains nine cards plus the borderless ‘photo card’ insert. Packs retail for $20-30 each. Click below to watch the rip. If you can’t see the video, click here.
