The Vintage Pack Break of the Week hit the road this week for a special edition. We gathered ’round the Just Collect booth at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago where Leighton Sheldon had secured a 1955 Bowman football first series wax pack.
Costing kids a nickel back in the day, these cards were supposed to contain seven cards and a stick of gum.
While it pre-dates the phenomenal ’57 Topps rookie class of John Unitas, Bart Starr and Paul Hornung by a couple of years, there is no shortage of star power in the set. Bobby Layne, Frank Gifford, George Blanda, Jim Ringo and other Hall of Famers are in the 160-card set so your odds of pulling at least one of them are pretty good.
1955 would be Bowman’s last year in the sports card business. They went head-to-head with Topps in baseball and football that year, and even with an NFL license, they couldn’t stay afloat once the season came to an end.
The pack was graded PSA 7 (near mint) and purchased through Baseball Card Exchange. After it was carefully removed from its plastic seal and the top holders gathered up, a crowd gathered around to watch it unfold. Check it out:
