Mile High Card Company put the wraps on 2014 with its annual December Premium Catalog Auction over the weekend, generating more than $1 million in total sales on just over 500 lots. Several new records were set for high-grade vintage cards.
Generating the most attention was the only PSA 10 1967 Topps #569 Rod Carew rookie card which sold for $95,293.70, well more than double the amount it sold for just two years ago.
Other significant sales included:
1957 Topps #24 Bill Mazeroski RC PSA 10 at $21,721 (last recorded sale was $13,897)
- 1933 Goudey #2 Dazzy Vance PSA 8 at $16,214 (last recorded sale was $11,850)
- 1955 Topps #123 Sandy Koufax RC PSA 8.5 at $10,817 (last recorded sale was $6,000)
- 1965 Topps #16 Astros Rookies Joe Morgan PSA 10 GEM MINT 1 of 2 In Existence At $10,496 (last recorded sale was $8,896)
- 1966 Topps #288 Dodgers Rookies Don Sutton PSA 10 GEM MINT 1 Of Just 2 Examples at $10,163 (last recorded sale was $7,918)
- 1935 Diamond Stars #54 Hank Greenberg PSA 9 MINT at $6,360 (last recorded sale was $4,163)
- 1972 Venezuelan Stamps #184 Nolan Ryan PSA 1 at #3,264 (last recorded sale was $810)
Also up for auction for the first time was a 1954 Johnston Cookies #5 Hank Aaron PSA 9 that sold for $4,393, a 1958 Topps #246 Yankees Team Checklist PSA 9 ($4,976), 1960 Fleer #72 Ted Williams PSA 10 ($3,630) and the highest graded known copy of the1887 N172 Old Judge John “Monte” Ward PSA 6 EX/MT ($3,396).
“We’re always excited to end the year with a special event that features some of the best material in the hobby,” said President and CEO Brian Drent. “Our consignors and bidders expect and demand nothing less, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
MHCC re-wrote the record books on several other sports cards as well with sales of a 1957 Topps #151 Paul Hornung RC PSA 9 at $23,962 (last recorded sale was $7,299.46), 1962 Topps #17 Mike Ditka PSA 9 at $17,986 (last recorded sale was $9,122), 1981 Topps #216 Joe Montana RC PSA 10 at $14,954 (last recorded sale was $11,750), 1976 #148 Walter Payton RC PSA 10 at $12,915 (last recorded sale was $10,215) and a1966 Philadelphia #89 Jim Taylor PSA 9 MINT at $5,181 (last recorded sale was $465)
Vintage basketball card collectors chased a 1963 Kahn’s Wieners Jerry West PSA 9 card, the only mint example in the entire Kahn’s set, sold for $5,416.
MHCC’s selection of elite-level memorabilia has been growing and in this auction, they sold single-signed baseballs from Roberto Clemente ($10,163) and Dwight D. Eisenhower ($5,733) as well as team-signed balls of the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers ($3,087) and 1992 Greensboro Hornets which featured future Yankees stars Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada ($1,268).
Other items include a one-of-a-kind 1911 Addie Joss Benefit Game Original Panoramic Photograph ($25,987), a rare 1915 Boston Red Sox Ornate Silk Pillowcase Featuring Tris Speaker ($15,081), a 1888 A35 Goodwin “Baseball Champions” Premium Round Album ($9,833) and a group of autographed George Burke photos which included Grover Cleveland Alexander ($2,551), Mel Ott ($2,171), Chief Bender ($1,170), Honus Wagner ($2,478), Hack Wilson ($1,973), Walter Johnson ($1,346), Jimmy Foxx ($1,268) and Napoleon Lajoie ($1,629).
