While some novice collectors who might consider buying graded cards get scared away when they see prices for near mint to mint and mint pre-1960s cards, the truth is that dropping down to the near mint ‘7’ or ex/mt ‘6’ level can provide some very attractive, high quality cards at fairly reasonable prices.
The owner of the collection that makes up our Vintage Buy of the Week obviously figured that out a long time ago. Just Collect obtained a near set of 1957 Topps baseball, with nearly 400 cards, all grading a straight nr mint 7. It would rank among the 50 best All-Time Finest sets on the PSA Set Registry. The set will be broken up and sold via eBay this fall.
The 1957 Topps set is among the hobby’s most popular, for a variety of reasons. It marks the permanent change in size for the company’s cards to what we see today. Secondly, Topps utilized a ‘pure photo’ concept with the set, with art work and dual photos fading into the past for good. Thirdly, the set offers an impressive roster of the most popular players from the golden era along with another group of rookie cards that includes several Hall of Famers.
While the newly-purchased set doesn’t include the regular issue Mickey Mantle or Ted Williams, it does have PSA 7 examples of established stars Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax, Yogi Berra, Ernie Banks, Al Kaline, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn and Roy Campanella and rookie cards of Brooks Robinson, Rocky Colavito, Don Drysdale and Bill Mazeroski. It also includes dozens of commons, multi-player cards, minor stars and team cards from the scarce mid-series (#265-352) that will likely attract strong interest from bidders. The final Dodgers and Giants cards issued before the teams migrated to the west coast are included.
You can see more cards from the set via the video below.
