They could have used some lightsabers that night, but even a 5-2 loss couldn’t put a damper on some cool Star Wars threads worn by the U.S. National Under-17 hockey team last month.
On January 21, the prospect-laden team took on the Madison Capitals wearing jerseys commemorating the film. Now, 24 of the one-of-a-kind jerseys are on the auction block to raise money to help sick kids.
Twenty game-worn and four game-issued jerseys worn by team members from the game at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, MI are on the block through MeiGray. Each has been autographed by the player.
According to MeiGray’s description, the front of the jerseys depicts Luke Skywalker holding a lightsaber next to Yoda in a scene from “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.” The back shows Skywalker in his pilot gear next to R2-D2 staring at his x-wing fighter as it sinks into the Dagobah swamp.”
Team USA’s equipment staff collected the jerseys after the game and each was then security tagged as part of USA Hockey’s partnership with MeiGray for game-used gear.
The Star Wars jersey nights have become part of the team’s schedule each year.
Bidding on each game-worn jersey opened at $250 with game-issued jerseys starting at $200. Proceeds from the auction will again go to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI.
Each jersey sold in auction will be accompanied by a generic pair of player socks, not necessarily the ones from the player whose jersey is sold.
USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program is designed to prepare young players for participation on U.S. National Teams and beyond. The team plays a schedule that includes games against United States Hockey League opponents and international competition in three tournaments over the course of the year.
