It’s a holiday tradition for fans of baseball history and baseball cards.
The Ty Cobb Museum in Royston, GA has released its annual baseball card featuring its Hall of Fame namesake. This year’s edition commemorates Ty Cobb’s career record of 54 steals of home plate, a record that will likely never be broken. The card was created from a photo of Cobb sliding home with the number “54” in Cobb’s favorite green color printed in large font on the front.
The card is available through its website for $9.35 each. The cards are serial-numbered to 3000.
The museum has also issued a 1-of-1 Cobb cut autograph card which will be given away free in a raffle drawing. The card includes a cut signature from a Cobb signed check.
Anyone who purchases the regular card will be entered into the drawing. One entry will be made in the raffle for each numbered card purchased, and the purchaser of the card number that matches the winning number drawn at the raffle will be notified at the address given at the time of purchase.
Copies of the 2018 and 2019 cards are also available.
Proceeds of the sales go toward the small town museum’s projects and expenses.
The nearest to Cobb’s record of 54 steals of home is Max Carey, who retired from the game in 1929 with 33 steals. Cobb also holds the record for most steals of home in a single season, with eight, a record he set in 1912.
The museum is currently closed due to COVID-19 but if they are taking reservations for private visits.
