The jersey Billy Martin was wearing when the Yankees captured the 1977 World Series is being auctioned. The story behind it is framed by tragedy but also by Martin’s own generosity.
It ended one life and turned another upside down. Robert Violante and his date were shot by David Berkowitz in late July of 1977. The "Son of Sam", as Bekowitz called himself, tried to kill both young people that night.
The woman, Stacy Moskowitz, did not survive. Violante did, but lost an eye. Billy Martin, who brought the Yankees their first championship since the Mantle years, presented Violante with the jersey he wore during Game Six against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Thirty years later, the New York Daily News reports that Violante, still single, is now selling the jersey. Current high bid was $11,000 as of early Wednesday morning.
