Topps plans to turn the release of 2020 Series 1 baseball into a spectator sport next month–but you’ll have to watch from home.
On Wednesday, the company announced plans for a “Million Card Rip Party” at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, with case break companies tearing open what amounts to about 3,000 hobby boxes of the year’s first baseball card product. It’ll take place on Tuesday, February 4 but is not open to the public.
Topps will live stream the event, which the company says will include interviews, player appearances and a look at some of the cards pulled.
It’ll be taking place a day ahead of the national release of Series 1, which was announced last summer.
Topps is touting a “Celebration of the Decades” party later this year in Las Vegas with a ticket giveaway that will take place in conjunction with Series 1.
The participating break companies and information on how collectors can participate while watching online will be announced in the coming days. Some participating breakers have indicated they will ship base cards while others will not.
