Topps has partnered with Sports Crate to create special cards for the latter’s new Major League Baseball product.
Sports Crate is a division of Loot Crate, a subscription-based concept that sends out a mystery box of officially licensed goods and experiences every month. Starting at $39.99 per month (or less for a season-long subscription), fans receive a box will of items associated with the team of their choice. It’s scheduled to launch this month with ten teams: the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.
The trading cards will debut in May’s “Bringing the Heat” themed crate, which focuses on each participating team’s top pitchers. Players who will be featured include Noah Syndergaard, Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Cole Hamels and Rick Porcello.
Topps will also create a limited foil board set that will be randomly inserted in ten percent of Sports Crate team-focused subscriptions.
The design of the cards is different from the flagship 2017 Topps set. A photo gallery of cards is at the bottom of this page.
“Sports Crate offers a unique fan experience and we’re excited to have Topps be a part of it,” said Clay Luraschi, Topps VP of Product Development. “It’s a natural fit.”
Sports Crate has licenses from both MLB and the MLBPA.
2017 Topps Sports Crate Baseball cards will have two different sets of numbers, with the first set featuring one card for each team. The complete master set corresponds with the second number and has 50 cards distributed through Sports Crate throughout the season.
“Trading cards hold timeless memories for fans and we are excited to partner with Topps to bring these exclusive Topps Sports Crate Baseball cards directly to them,” said Doug Wadleigh, SVP and GM of Sports Crate. “We’re giving fans an added thrill to unwrap within their monthly unboxing experience.”
Each Sports Crate offers between five and seven items overall with a value of at least twice that, according to the company. Each will include at least one apparel item and a chance to win exclusive team experiences.
