The Summer Games are history and suddenly North America needs some new television programming to fill the nightly void. From Michael Phelps to the U.S. gymnasts; Usain Bolt to Katie Ledecky, there were plenty of great athletes to watch in Rio.
Card collectors are now a little more familiar with the faces and names behind the U.S. athletes in 2016 Topps Olympic Team Hopefuls, a product that arrived weeks before the games actually began. There are Paralympic athletes, too, and they’ll take over the spotlight in the coming days.
This year’s product advertises one autograph, one relic card and one commemorative relic but Topps has been known to pack a little extra in them. Thanks to the well-known names in the 24-pack boxes, sales have been fairly strong…even if some of the athletes pictured didn’t make the team—or didn’t always behave well (we’re looking at you, Ryan Lochte).
A few former greats are also included.
Mike Fruitman of Mike’s Stadium Sports Cards ripped into a box during the last weekend of competition to give us a look at what’s inside.
