Some great exposure for the hobby this week as ESPN The Magazine devotes some space to Topps and the making of baseball cards.
Among the things we learn is that from the first photos taken in spring training until we actually see those cards in packs can range from 4-8 months.
Years ago, most players didn’t give their cards a second thought but the current crop is well aware of how it all goes down. Many were collectors themselves.
Those photos get taken during picture day, which is an annual rite of spring in Arizona and Florida, where the players pose for most of the shots you’ll see in publications and on cards the rest of the year. That’s where the bulk of ESPN’s story takes place as a long-time Topps photographer snaps away in Mariners’ camp.
The magazine should be a keeper but you don’t have to wait to see it.
Here’s the online version courtesy of long-time writer Steve Wulf and be sure to click on the photo gallery which also takes us inside Topps offices for a look at the cards being put together.
