Sunday marked the 25th anniversary of the day Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played record finally fell. Now, Topps has teamed up with the man who broke it. The new Topps X Cal Ripken Jr. 2131 baseball card set is an online exclusive put together with help from the Ironman himself.
The 50-card set features what Topps calls “unparalleled storytelling and visuals” centered about the streak and “all the moments and figures that played a role in it.”
Ripken has signed some of the cards, which will be randomly inserted into sets that are purchased. The 50-card sets are priced at $25. There’s also a “Collector’s Edition” priced at $125 that guarantees a Ripken auto.
Themes inside the set include:
- The Journey to 2131
- Record Breaking Game
- The Streak Ends
- The People Behind The Streak
- Cal’s Personal Collection
Serial-numbered parallel cards are also possible, with plans for those numbered to 50, 31, 21, 8 and 1.
The set is a print-on-demand product, meaning the number of sets made will be determined by how many are purchased. The sets are available on this page until October 3.
