The Golden Giveaway (www.topps.com/golden) is off to a strong start according to Topps. The Giveaway allows collectors to enter special code cards found in Topps Series 1 to unlock cards, collect digital coins and win online. To date, autograph cards have been awarded, many special 14K gold-embedded cards have been unlocked, and there are many more to be found.
Topps has announced two autograph cards will be added to the prize mix beginning today. Hot rookies Yu Darvish and Yoenis Cespedes will have standard cards to unlock and have also signed 25 cards each for the promotion.
The early buzz on both players was strong but each has had his share of troubles adjusting to the big leagues. Japanese pitching prospect Darvish has given up a lot of hits and walks in his first two starts with the Texas Rangers, but sports a 1-0 record and still hasn’t given up a homer. His WHIP is a frightening 2.21.
Cespedes, the former star of the Cuban national tam, hit safely in his first four games, but is only batting .212 for the year.
