The highest graded set of one of the hobby’s truly unique issues is about to go on the market.
Heritage Auctions will sell the #1 “Current Finest” set of 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders in its upcoming Summer Sports Card Auction, set to open July 9. It’s the second All-Time Finest set ever curated.
The artistic cards were interactive—designed with a flip-top allowing collectors to see two player depictions. Each player “shared” the lower half of the card. There were 50 cards (100 players) in a full set. Many of the biggest stars of the era are included including Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson. Nap Lajoie, Frank Chance and several other Hall of Famers.
The design, plus the fragile paper stock makes them extremely challenging to track down in high grade. The set offered by Heritage has an 8.1 weighted GPA. Two cards are graded Mint 9, five are rated NM/MT+ 8.5 and 43 are PSA 8 NM/MT. A full breakdown is below.
The set will be offered as one lot and is expected to sell for $80,000 or more.
The entire auction, featuring hundreds of single cards, complete sets, unopened items and related material, is scheduled to close over a two-day period, July 30 and 31.
