The auction of items from the life and career of Bill Russell is heading for the finish line with a live finale set for this Friday in Boston.
Hunt Auctions is selling Russell’s championship rings, MVP awards, photos, some game-used items and other items. The auction got a major plug from the NBA on TNT crew Tuesday night, with Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley all indicating an interest in owning some of the items.
Shaq, in fact, indicated he was planning to buy all of Russell’s rings.
Smith was drafted during Russell’s brief tenure as coach of the Sacramento Kings in the 1980s.
The auction’s top item at the moment is Russell’s green road jersey from Game 7 of the 1969 NBA Finals–the last uniform top he ever wore. It has a high bid of $402,628.
Some of the auction proceeds will be going to charity.
Internet bidding will close Thursday night, ahead of the live portion of the event the following day.
