The NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs are now underway, and Tim Hortons stores in Canada got things started the morning of the first game as the coffee shop chain dropped the puck on a brand new set of cards honoring some past greats.
Their with Upper Deck resulted in a second hockey card release of the season as 2023 Tim Hortons Legends hockey cards went on sale at 5 AM Monday. The promotion follows the regular Tim Hortons set that features primarily active players and was released last October.
The format of the Legends set is similar to previous Tim Hortons releases. Three-card packs include two base set cards and one insert or parallel. The base cards are printed on micro-etched gold holofoil.
There’s also an album created exclusively for the Legends set that’s available in stores.

There are 180 players featured in the set, which is built around NHL legends and members of Team Canada’s women’s team. The Canadian women earned a silver medal at the World Women’s Hockey Championships in the Toronto suburb of Brampton, Ont. on Sunday, losing 6-3 to the United States.
The wow factor that Upper Deck and Tim Hortons delivers in this set are autographs. They are rare, but they are spectacular. Collectors can pull one of 99 Wayne Gretzky signed cards, one of 33 Patrick Roy signed cards, and 1 of 22 Hayley Wickenheiser signed cards.
“Being a part of the Tim Hortons Legends Trading Cards set has been a wonderful experience and a chance to re-live some of the biggest moments of my career,” said Wayne Gretzky. “It was great to work with Hayley and Ray and celebrate our accomplishments together.”
In addition to Gretzky and Roy, the superstar-studded set features cards of Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Ray Bourque, Teemu Selanne, Niklas Lidstrom, Martin St. Louis, the recently-deceased Bobby Hull, and many more big name stars.
Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford and Angela James, who have all grown to become household names in Canada, highlight the women’s Team Canada players in the set.
Product Surprised Hobby
The new Tim Hortons program snuck up on the hobby, as many assumed that there would only be one release this year. During the 2021-22 season, the second Tim Hortons Upper Deck hockey card program focused on the Canadian national team and had a planned release around the World Junior Championships.
The only hint that collectors had was some small, rotating signage that appeared on the drive-thru screen the weekend before the product launch.
A pack of three Tim Hortons Legends cards is available for $1 (Cdn) with the purchase of a qualifying beverage, or for $1.99 without a qualifying beverage. Participating restaurants will also have a Tim Hortons Legends Trading Card collection binder available for $19.99.

Last summer, Tim Hortons was among the companies that pulled their corporate sponsorship from the national men’s program and the World Junior Championships over the culture at Hockey Canada. Like other major sponsors, Tim Hortons continued to support women’s hockey and parahockey at the national level, but not the men’s program.
In May, 2022, it was revealed by a reporter that Hockey Canada settled a lawsuit with a woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted by eight players from the 2018 junior men’s hockey team at a June gala event in London, Ont., that year.
During a hearing with Canada’s standing committee on heritage in Ottawa in July, 2022, it was revealed that Hockey Canada settled 21 sexual misconduct claims and have paid out $8.9 million to victims since 1989.
The scandal, along with the withdrawal of many Team Canada men’s and junior team sponsorships, pulled the plug on any possibilities of an Upper Deck Team Canada-themed Tim Hortons hockey card set, as well as an Upper Deck Team Canada hobby product. That product left a void in the hobby, as it was hockey’s equivalent of what some of the Topps, Panini and Leaf prospects and draft pick sets are to baseball, football and basketball.
Tim Hortons is Canada’s largest restaurant chain operating in the quick service industry with nearly 4,000 restaurants across the country. They have more than 5,400 restaurants in Canada, the United States and around the world.
