For collectors who like things in threes, 2020 Topps Triple Threads baseball fits the bill. The long-running staple of the company’s baseball product line, Triple Theads is usually pretty consistent in what it offers and this year will be no different. Collectors can count on finding some low serial-numbered cards, most of which will feature an autograph, relic or both.
2020 Topps Triple Threads Configuration and Base Set
The product becomes available the week of Sept. 16 with the usual configuration of two mini boxes inside a master box.
A master box will contain one autographed Triple Relic card, numbered to 99 or less; one Triple Relic card numbered to 36 or less; an Autograph Rookie card or an Autograph Jumbo Relic numbered to 99 or less; and one Jumbo Relic card numbered to 36 or less.
Each case is guaranteed to contain a 1-of-1 Autograph Relic Card and an Autograph Relic Combo Card featuring three or more players.
The base set will include 100 players, and there will be nine numbered parallels for each card. The parallels include Amethyst, numbered to 99, along with Emerald (259), Amber (199), Gold (99), Citrine (75), Onyx (50), Sapphire (25), and Ruby (1/1). Printing plates are also 1/1 cards.
Autograph and Relic Cards
Topps combines plenty of autographs and relics into the Triple Threads brand. And a lot of the subsets revolve around three players. Triple Threads Autograph Relic Combo cards, for example, are a staple of this product and feature three different players per card.
The base cards are numbered to 36, and there are parallels in Amethyst (numbered to 27), Emerald (18), Gold (9) and Sapphire (3). Ruby parallels and printing plates are 1/1 cards. As collectors have come to expect, there’s a die-cut window used to display memorabilia pieces while spelling out a particular word or a player’s name.
Rookies & Future Phenom Autographed Relics will contain up to 50 subjects and will be numbered to 99. The player’s signature will be accompanied by three swatches of memorabilia.
There are parallels, too with Amethyst, numbered to 75, along with Emerald (50), Onyx (35, and a new parallel), Sapphire (10), and three 1/1 parallels — Ruby, Wood, and Printing Plates.
Triple Threads Relic cards feature three players and memorabilia and are numbered to 36. There are parallels in Amethyst (27), Emerald (18), Gold (9). Sapphire (3) and Ruby (1/1). The print run and parallels for Relics Combo cards and Relics Legends cards are the same.
New to the brand this year is Historic Ties Triple Autograph Relic cards which feature three players from different eras who share a common bond in baseball history. Even the base cards are low numbered in this subset, coming in at 9. Parallels include Sapphire, numbered to 3, and Ruby (1/1).
Another subset making its debut is Touch ’Em All Three-Player Autograph Relics, which pays tribute to power-hitting teammates and the bases they touched. The subset features autographs and pieces of game-used bases. Like Historic Ties, the print run on these cards are scarce, with base cards numbered to 9, parallels in Sapphire (3) and Ruby (1/1).
Triple Threads book cards offer a wide variety of possibilities for collectors. The Jumbo Plus Autograph Relic Book cards include two patch pieces and a jumbo patch piece. The base cards are numbered to 3, with a 1/1 Ruby parallel. Letter Plus Autograph Relic Book cards include two patch pieces and a nameplate letter patch. It also is numbered to 3 in the base set and has a 1/1 Ruby parallel.
Autograph Deca Relic Book cards include one player with 10 relics. The base card is numbered to 10, with parallels in Gold (5) and Ruby (1/1). Deca Autograph Relic Combo Book cards offer a staggering 10 different players and 10 swatches. This is also numbered to 10, with parallels in Gold (5) and Ruby (1/1).
Windows into Greatness features one player in a three-panel book card. This subset is limited to base cards numbered to 5, Gold parallels numbered to 3 and 1/1 Ruby parallels.
All-Star jerseys are another theme in this year’s set. The All-Star Patches card is numbered to 9 and has a 1/1 Ruby parallel. The book cards are all 1/1 and include Jumbo ASG patch, Sleeve Team patch, Laundry Tag cards, Majestic Logo Patch cards and Bat Nameplate cards.
There are also 1/1 Knob Book cards, Cut Above Signature cards, and Dual Cut Above Autograph Book cards. Cut Above features a cut signature and memorabilia, while the Dual version has cut signatures and memorabilia from two players.
Boxes of 2020 Topps Triple Threads are available on eBay for around $260.
