There is a lot at stake – more so than usual – in this year’s NBA Finals. And what’s at stake will have a huge impact on the basketball card market. Some call it a changing of the guard. But it’s more than that. It’s a battle to see who will, once and for all, be the new face of the NBA. If you have been following basketball card podcasts, online posts, and auctions of … [Read more...] about The Finals Offer Players a Chance to Be New Face of NBA, Hobby

Bill Walton Talked Cards, Dr. J, Classic Playoff Series at 1995 National
I heard the sad news about Bill Walton’s passing and I looked on my Ikea shelf filled with binders of cards, boxes of cards, and various pieces of memorabilia. One of my favorites has always been the mini Spalding basketball with a Topps logo, and a personalized autograph from Bill Walton. I don’t know how much time I spent staring at that ball in the hours after learning of … [Read more...] about Bill Walton Talked Cards, Dr. J, Classic Playoff Series at 1995 National
Ten 1970s Basketball Cards for the Hoop History Lover
They went from tall to small, then back to small again. 1970s Topps basketball cards were all over the board in the decade in which they dutifully produced sets each and every season. They're far from fancy and some years Topps didn't have the rights to show logos so the players wore shirts backwards when the photographer snapped. It was like it or lump it for basketball … [Read more...] about Ten 1970s Basketball Cards for the Hoop History Lover

A Day at the Philly Show Packed with Fun for the Whole Family
We made the two hour trip south from our house to the beautiful suburb of Oaks, PA for the Philadelphia Sports Card & Memorabilia Show Saturday morning. We hit the PA turnpike and drove through a virtual monsoon of rain and wind but, as always, it was well worth it. We decided to bring my daughter this time because she's become such a fan of sports cards and … [Read more...] about A Day at the Philly Show Packed with Fun for the Whole Family

One Last Year in the Wilderness – Basketball Cards in 1982-83
That major sports card manufacturers have historically made a habit of taking hiatuses from basketball is well-trodden ground. That proclivity for punting on hoops meant that the decades of the 1950s and 1960s – or nearly 30% of NBA history – saw the release of just two mainstream sets. On the bright side, as a result of having to make up for lost time, these issues – … [Read more...] about One Last Year in the Wilderness – Basketball Cards in 1982-83

Editor’s Notes: Dr. J’s Favorite Piece of Memorabilia; NHL Jersey Auction; CCG Milestone, DJ Skee Hobby Show
He auctioned off most of the items from his career a few years ago for more than $3 million, but there’s one memento from his career that Julius Erving won’t part with. “My Hall of Fame ring,” he told me during a recent chat session on behalf of Chase VISA that also featured fellow icon Bill Walton. Both were in the same class that entered Springfield in 1993. Dr. J averaged … [Read more...] about Editor’s Notes: Dr. J’s Favorite Piece of Memorabilia; NHL Jersey Auction; CCG Milestone, DJ Skee Hobby Show

One of the larger Midwestern sports card shows of the year won’t be taking place in 2020. The annual Thanksgiving weekend event at Moeller High School in Cincinnati was cancelled Tuesday.
