Tinker, Evers and Chance are just three of the sought-after cards in the 1911 T205 gold-border tobacco card set. Smithsonian Magazine features the players and the set in its current issue.
They are the double play combination that inspired one of baseball’s most famous literary works. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance had different personalities but on the diamond they were usually in sych.
The three Cubs were prominent fixtures on tobacco cards in the first part of the 20th century. T206 is the most well-known example but the T205 gold border set has plenty of fans too.
The cards have become valuable little works of art, of course.
Worthy, we now know, of the Smithsonian’s attention. The magazine offers a feature story on the cards, the photographer and the era in its current issue.
