Game worn gear from numerous hockey greats, Stanley Cup rings, rare vintage cards and memorabilia are part of Classic Auctions new Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction.
The catalog includes 1,066 lots, headlined by a huge array of game-worn jerseys and equipment. Among the top items is a jersey from Hall of Famer Jari Kurri’s 1980-81 rookie season, one in which the Finnish sensation racked up 75 points in 75 games and 12 more in nine Edmonton Oilers playoff games.
The jersey, with multiple team repairs has been photo matched and was originally acquired as part of a large group of jerseys sold by owner Peter Pocklington.
A pair of game-used gloves from Wayne Gretzky’s greatest season are also drawing strong early interest from bidders. Worn by Gretzky during his remarkable 215-point season of 1985-86 when he took home both the Ross and Hart trophies, they carry Gretzky’s autograph on the left glove.
A captain’s jersey donned by fellow Hall of Famer Mario LeMieux, photo matched to four different hockey cards and video from a Nov. 30, 2002 game, is another key item. The Penguins jersey also comes with a team LOA.
The auction also includes over 50 items from the personal collection of Hall of Famer Dino Ciccarelli, including several game jerseys, game-used milestone pucks and sticks and other memorabilia. Among the key pieces from his 19-year career: a 1994-95 Detroit Red Wings game-worn Stanley Cup Finals jersey, 1983 NHL All-Star jersey, his 1977-78 London Knights jersey and game-used sticks he acquired from numerous other players including Gretzky, LeMieux and Alex Ovechkin. All of the items come with his signed LOA.
There’s also a rookie jersey from Teemu Selanne’s 1992-93 season with the Winnipeg Jets, one in which he captured the Calder Trophy and another worn by legendary Chicago Blackhawks goalie Tony Esposito during the 1976-77 season.
Baseball fans will see a 1978 Gary Carter game jersey with several tell-tale signs of use.
Two Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup championship rings—one from 2020 and the other from the team’s 2021 title—are part of the sale as well.
Sports cards occupy a big part of the offerings. The sale has what Classic officials call “one of the most amazing pre-war hockey card collections we’ve ever had the pleasure to offer.” Among the 372 trading card lots is a 1911-12 Imperial Tobacco (C55) set, with all cards graded by PSA including the Vezina rookie card (EX 5) and a 1910-11 Imperial Tobacco (C56) set of 36. Dozens of other pre- and post-War hockey sets are included along with vintage unopened boxes and 1923 Maple Crispette cards of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb.
The auction runs through May 2 at ClassicAuctions.net.
