Topps capitalized on Stephen Strasburg mania by getting a photo of his first big league pitch and putting it on a baseball card, available during the rookie’s winning performance against the Pirates June 8.
Now, those cards are popping up on eBay.
Collectors who unlocked their Series One or Two “Topps Million Card Giveaway” code on winning game cards had a shot at winning one of the Strasburg cards, adorned with the rookie card logo.
The cards began showing up on eBay the night of the game and at least eleven have been sold thus far, many with the ‘Buy it Now’ feature. $405 has been the highest price paid for the special card so far with the lowest winning bid at $275. The average price paid among those sold so far has been $345.
A 1-1 Bowman Chrome Superfractor card generated extensive media coverage when it sold recently for over $16,000.
Topps hasn’t said how many of the Strasburg “Million Card” rookies it produced, only that they were “very limited”.
There were over 630 general listings for Strasburg rookie cards on eBay as of early Monday morning.
