It may not have mattered if the National Sports Collectors Convention was in Baltimore or Bowling Green, but it didn’t hurt that this year’s show was a stone’s throw from Stephen Strasburg’s big league home city.
The hype surrounding his first baseball cards drew some extra juice from the locals who’ve seen him pitch and are already big fans.
A limited number of the cards were handed out and collectors nearly trampled each other in their quest to get one and flip it for a quick buck. For veterans, it brought back memories of the 1991 convention in Anaheim and the rush for free promo cards at the hobby’s wildest event.
Even though the whole episode wasn’t exactly wholesome, Strasburg has given the modern card market a boost.
Ryan Petzar made the trek to Baltimore for Yahoo! Sports. He offers up a story, pictures, some history and a little video too.
