Shoeless Joe Jackson’s favorite bat went unsold on dBay with a $600,000 minimum bid.
Black Betsy, considered perhaps the most famous game used bat in existence, hasn’t been sold since 2001 when collector/dealer Rob Mitchell purchased it for $577,000.
The 40-ounce, 34.5 inch bat, made of unseasoned hickory, carries with it some truth and folklore, but there is no question it was once the prized possession of Joe Jackson who used in the Major Leagues and again during his barnstorming days after he was banned from baseball.
Now, more than two years after a sale attempt through Sotheby’s/SCP Auctions failed to meet the reserve price, Mitchell’s company had the bat on the auction block again. It was placed on eBay last week, with a minimum bid of $600,000 and a "Buy it Now" price of $750,000. The auction closed Wednesday night without a bid.
