It’s always great to see history and the finality as professional sports seasons come to an end when a new champion (and champions) are crowned. Whether it’s the team as a whole or star individual players who are now even further up the all-time hierarchy, I enjoyed watching the Golden State Warriors put it all back together and win the title. Our owner Jason is actually a Boston Celtics fan, so as you might imagine he wasn’t quite as happy with the outcome.
I personally am a fan of greatness, so I was excited to see Steph Curry and company further their individual legacies, the team legacy and the city’s dynasty. We sold piles of Steph Curry items last week including every rookie and insert card we had in stock to action figures, bobbleheads and anything rabid fans could get their hands on. I always joke that I don’t even need to watch the previous night’s games because whoever won or whoever was talked about most winds up selling online or at the shop. I know many of us are prisoners of the moment from game to game and series to series but it really is kind of humorous to see how quickly things sell after just a game or two.
I totally get it because I find myself getting the itch, too. If someone gets hot I will start searching eBay and other online platforms for their best rookie cards if I don’t already have them in my collection.
We made a great addition to our break room this week as the owner picked up a nice vintage NBA Jam arcade game.
There have been countless games come in and out of that break room over the years and I can count on one hand how many I’ve played but I will definitely be stopping to play two on two basketball with flaming nets and big honking heads as often as I can. Of course, we had it delivered and had to fire it up and play a best of three series pretty much right on the spot. Even as a kid, I wasn’t a big fan of arcades but NBA Jam was always my jam. If anybody reading this is ever in the area stop by the shop and we’ll fire it up for a game for you.
It was a pretty moderate week of new releases but we did receive the 2022 Panini Father’s Day multi- sport packs. The checklist is solid and some of the inserts look really really nice so, I’m curious to see the results of what’s inside after they went home with collectors.
Many of our regulars were asking about the program and asking about the packs outright the day they came in the door, so there was definitely a good amount of buzz and some excitement in that direction. We are closed Sunday, so we had our version of The Father’s Day celebration Saturday at the shop. There were a number of people who came in and bought qualifying products and picked up a few packs but unfortunately very few of them opened the packs in store. The cards we saw were nice but we didn’t see anything spectacular. I’m sure any number of our regulars picked up packs and will let us know if they got any fire.
I was somewhat happy to close the door Saturday afternoon as I was looking forward to Father’s Day and spending the day with my wife and kiddos. Here’s hoping all fathers and father figures out there had a wonderful day with some card related fun.
