For the Mariano Rivera collector who thinks he has everything, Steiner Sports Auctions is presenting a pair of shoes from the lowest point of his long career.
In their latest online auction, the company is offering the sneakers Rivera was wearing when he tore his ACL while shagging fly balls before a Yankees-Royals game in Kansas City in May of last year.
Collectors of game-used memorabilia know there isn’t much of anything that escapes a big league ballpark these days without turning into something that someone somewhere might want.
The story would be kind of sick had Rivera not made a complete recovery and returned to his familiar role as closer this year. At the time, a comeback seemed a little unlikely.
The shoes, which are being offered with a $100 opening bid, will also come with a signed letter from Rivera, stating they are the real deal.
Several other Rivera items are being offered in the auction along with two dozen pieces from the life and times of the late Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Deacon Jones.
