This one may take awhile to top.
Heritage Auctions announced Monday that its 2024 Summer Platinum Night Auction had brought in over $61.9 million, a new record for any sports memorabilia auction.
A three session feeding frenzy of game jerseys, bats and baseball cards, the auction saw more than 2,500 bidders worldwide participate, according to Heritage.
“This weekend was the most thrilling three days in my career and the 20-year history of Heritage Sports,” the company’s Director of Sports, Chris Ivy, noted after the smoke had cleared. “No one in our world has ever seen anything like this, from client participation and media engagement to the dozens of new world record results established.”
Much of the attention was on the 1932 Babe Ruth ‘called shot’ jersey that netted over $24 million to set a new record for any single sports collectible. However, the auction drew a half dozen seven-figure results.
Jackie Robinson emerged as one of the auction’s history-making headliners when the Brooklyn Dodgers jersey he wore during the 1951 season realized $5.52 million. The jersey set a Robinson record long before the final bid was placed early Saturday morning, when it surpassed his previous jersey record of $4.2 million.
The jersey, from his .338 season and adorned with the 75th National League Anniversary patch, was accompanied by a pair of 1950 pants.
A 1952-53 Mickey Mantle jersey, a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie jersey and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8 and a Joe Jackson bat all crossed the million dollar mark.
Among the surprises: a 1984 Eric Dickerson jersey from the game in which he broke the NFL’s single-season rushing record. The LA Rams jersey is inscribed by Dickerson, “New N.F.L. Record, 2007 yds., 12-9-84, Los Angeles Rams 27, Houston Oilers 16.”
By the time it sold Sunday, it had smashed through its pre-auction estimate to realize $252,000.
Another notable record was the highest price recorded for a Jordan rookie, a Jordan sticker with a PSA 9 grade for the card and a PSA 10 autograph rating that netted $204,000.
