Seven lots brought over $100,000 each in Mastro Auctions Premier sale including a near perfect 1938 Goudey set that sold for over $286,000.
A 1938 high grade Goudey Heads Up set brought a stunning $238,587 in the latest sale of rare vintage sports cards and memorabilia conducted by Mastro Auctions.
The 48-card graded set was offered either individually or as a group and the set bid won out. With the company’s 20% buyer’s premium added, the final price was $286,304. The set was part of the famed Lionel Carter collection and had been put together by the long-time collector during and shortly after its issue in 1938. It included several mint and near mint graded examples of Hall of Famers including Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx and a SGC 98 (gem mint) Hank Greenberg.
Also surpassing the $200,00 mark was a T3 Turkey Red set of 100 (plus one variation). One of the most popular pre-War sets, the 1911 issue included a high bid of $176,068, while the premium pushed the price to $211,282.
The portion of Carter’s phenomenal baseball card collection brought $1.6 million but Carter told the Chicago Sun-Times he would rather not have felt forced to the cards.
