Dozens of Major League hitters have signed up to use special pink bats this Sunday. The bats will again be sold in an auction along with several other pieces of game used memorabilia. The number of bats available will increase this year thanks to more player participation.
Over 200 Major League players will help raise awareness for breast cancer on Mother’s Day by using pink Louisville Slugger bats. To date, more than 200 players have signed up to use a pink bat, which is more than twice the participation in 2006.
Select game-used bats, as well as team-autographed bats from every club, will be auctioned on MLB.com at a later date, with proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Among the players expected to use pink bats and donate them to the auction are: Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Chase Utley, Aaron Rowand, Johnny Damon, Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield, Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, Marcus Thames, Craig Monroe, Sean Casey, Adam Kennedy, David Eckstein, Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Wilson Betemit, Brady Clark, Andre Ethier, Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra, Jeff Kent, Mike Lieberthal, Russell Martin, Brad Ausmus, Lance Berkman, Biggio, Morgan Ensberg, Adam Everett, Mike Lamb, Mark Loretta, Chris Burke, Jason Lane, Carlos Lee, Paul Konerko, A.J. Last year’s ‘Pink Bat Day’ raised over $360,000 for the Komen Foundation. Bill Hall’s bat which was used to hit a game-winning home run, sold for $25,000 to Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio, who then presented it to Hall’s mother Vera.
Players will sport pink wristbands and pink ribbons will be displayed on player uniforms and by all on-field personnel. There will also be pink ribbon logos on the bases and commemorative home plates, along with pink dugout lineup cards. Most of the items will be included in the MLB.com auctions beginning in a couple of weeks.
Fans can also purchase their own personalized pink bat at MLB.com, or www.slugger.com, with Major League Baseball donating $10 from the sale of each bat to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
