The Rodney Dangerfield of Wagner cards?
The E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner doesn’t get the respect of its famous T206 cousin, but true collectors know a rare card when they see one.
The 1910 E90-2 set was a "regional" type issue, consisting of 11 members of the 1909 World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Babe Adams, Fred Clarke and Wagner were among the stars of the day included in the set, issued in Pennsylvania, where American Caramel was based. The cards measure 1 1/2" by 2 3/4" and advertise "Baseball Caramels" on the back. Not many have survived in the 97 years that have passed.
Over the weekend, what appears to be the same mid-grade Wagner card that sold in a Mastro Auction last month drew 29 bids and brought over $15,000 on eBay.
A PSA 5 version sold for over $11,000 as recently as April.
