Sports is just one part of a new portal for collectors to share their stuff. An auction platform may not be far behind.
A group of University of Chicago Business school graduate school students has turned their idea for a global collecting community into reality, creating a new site for collectors looking to organize and share their memorabilia on-line.
Collectica.com offers members the ability to upload photos of their collections, sharing them with fellow enthusiasts around the world. The site offers a home for collectors of everything, including sports memorabilia.
Collectica.com was the winner of the 2006 Edward L. Kaplan New Venture Challenge, the business plan competition at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Angel investors have since put money toward the start-up.
“Collectica’s goal is to create a global collectors’ community,” said Collectica president Michael Dworecki. “Our free software and collection management tools will make it simple for collectors to share information and post photos of the objects they are most passionate about.”
In addition to collection management software, Collectica.com also offers social networking tools such as clubs, blogs, forums, and news and event information to allow collectors to come together and discuss topics of interest. The club feature is unique in that it offers the traditional collector clubs new opportunities to enhance club activities and increase membership participation.
Collectica.com will soon offer the opportunity for on-line auctions at listing prices well below eBay. Competing with the on-line giant is a daunting task but Dworecki’s group believes if it can make inroads in each collecting genre, the site can grow.
"We’re at a point now where collectibles are just another item on eBay," Dworeki told SportsCollectorsDaily.com. You find them hidden alongside anything and everything. We think a collecting website is the better place to sell that type of item."
